"I can't wait to tell Lila about the party you went to in Cedar Springs on Saturday," Jessica said excitedly. "She's going to die when she finds out Campbell Rochester was there." The twins were driving to school on Monday morning—or, rather, Elizabeth was driving, and Jessica was trying to put on her mascara. The car jerked slightly as Elizabeth shifted gears to make a left-hand turn. "Take it easy, Liz. I almost got this in my eye," Jessica complained.

"Sorry," Elizabeth apologized. "You know, Jess, that party wasn't so great. Some of the kids were pretty nice, but I have to admit that overall I felt uncomfortable with them. Some of them seemed really unfriendly."

"Oh, Liz, you probably just didn't understand them, that's all." Jessica tucked her mascara back inside her purse. "I can tell just from reading the catalog that the people at Lovett have really solid values."

Elizabeth shrugged. She knew better than to argue with her sister about the merits of Lovett Academy. "Well, I didn't get along with all of them, anyway. I don't think Todd had a very good time, either. I'm sort of glad, because to tell you the truth I was starting to feel . . ." Her voice trailed off, and she could sense Jessica's gaze sharpening.

"You sound a little worried," Jessica observed. "Don't tell me you and Todd aren't getting along!"

"No, we're fine," Elizabeth insisted. "In fact, we ended up having a really good time for the rest of the weekend. It's just that sometimes"—she sighed—"I get this nagging little feeling that ever since his father's promotion, Todd's values are changing. He talks a lot more about money than he used to. He told me yesterday at the beach that he wants to learn how to play polo! This is Todd, who used to say any sport but basketball was out of the question. He—" Elizabeth paused for a moment. "Never mind," she said at last.

Jessica looked at her twin. "Uh-oh. Maybe you two are spending too much time together."

Elizabeth laughed. That was always Jessica's first idea, since her idea of "going steady" was seeing the same guy for two dates on the same weekend. "I don't think so," Elizabeth told her sister. "Actually, it's really difficult for us, being at different schools. We don't spend nearly as much time together as we did when he was at Sweet Valley High."

Jessica shrugged. "Well, just make the most of it, then," she advised.

Elizabeth pulled the Fiat into the school parking lot. "Hey, today's the day we find out the teams for the Battle of the Schools," she reminded her sister. "Which one do you want to be on?"

"None," Jessica said, frowning. "I told you, I don't want to be part of any of it, not when I'm thinking about switching schools. It's too hard deciding which school to be loyal to."

Elizabeth shook her head as she turned off the engine. "I can't believe you, Jess. How can you possibly feel loyal to Lovett? You haven't even taken any of the entrance tests yet.
